“My journey started when I was a toddler. My parents would take me to kiddie races, and I’d join in on the fun.” As Erica grew older, she continued running through middle and high school, eventually focusing on distance running. The key to staying motivated has been her love for competition and setting a good example for her athletes. “Even on days when I don’t feel like running, I remind myself that I’ll feel great afterward.”

Q: What was it like to qualify for the Olympic trials?

Qualifying for the Olympic trials was a dream come true for Erica. It wasn’t easy—she missed the qualifying time by just 24 seconds in 2017, which was a tough blow. “That was a big blow to my self-esteem, but then it fired me up where I was like, I am going to do this and nothing will stop me.” Instead of letting it discourage her, it motivated her even more. She worked harder, took better care of herself, and eventually qualified in 2019.

Q: Can you share some tips on how to stay motivated to exercise regularly?

Erica believes in setting small, manageable goals. Sometimes just getting out the door is the hardest part. “Just get out the door. Even if you start with the intention to take it easy, you often find that you can do more once you start.” Having a supportive community, whether it’s friends, family, or a coach, can make a big difference. They help keep you accountable and motivated.

Q: How does your diet support your training and overall health?

Erica’s diet is focused on whole foods. “I start my day with oats, honey, and salt for electrolytes.” After her run, she has a protein shake with frozen fruits, followed by a balanced meal with protein, carbs, and veggies. Eating healthy snacks throughout the day, like rice cakes with hummus or nuts, helps keep her energy levels stable. She believes a good diet directly impacts performance and overall well-being.

Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to start running or improve their fitness?

“Start now and don’t wait for the perfect moment. Sign up for a race to hold yourself accountable, even if your goal is just to finish.” If you’re serious about improving, consider hiring a coach for guidance. Consistency and a positive mindset are key, and it’s never too late to start.

Q: How do you balance training with enjoying life?

Erica emphasized the importance of enjoying life while staying dedicated to your goals. “I love ice cream and make it a point to find a good homemade ice cream shop when I travel.” She also enjoys champagne for celebrations. “So I took long periods of time without drinking alcohol. Like, when I’m really training and then that way if I get to an event, like this weekend I’m going to a bachelorette party. It’s ok if I have some champagne, you know.”

Q: Any final tips for our readers who are inspired by the Olympics and want to improve their health and fitness?

Erica believes in the power of visualization and setting clear goals. “Visualize your goals and believe in yourself. Surround yourself with positive people who support your journey.” Take small steps consistently, and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. And most importantly, enjoy the process. Health and fitness are lifelong journeys, and every step forward counts.
