Hello, lovely readers!
Are you feeling overwhelmed and burnt out by your career? Sometimes, the most challenging decision we face is knowing when to let go and pursue a path that truly aligns with our passions and well-being. Today, I want to share my personal journey in hopes that it will inspire you to evaluate your own career and wellness.
A couple of years ago, while my blog, Clean Cooking with Caitlin, was still growing and not yet providing a substantial income, I decided to leverage my background in digital media and start a web development agency – Spacebar Sorcery. With a degree from UCF in Digital Media and extensive experience in coding, design, and UX, I thought this would be the logical step to ensure financial stability. I even joined the UCF incubator program, secured several projects, and things seemed promising despite the typical ups and downs of a new business.
However, I struggled with a lack of passion and time management, especially as my pregnancy progressed. At 24 weeks pregnant, the stress of running a business began to weigh heavily on me, and I knew this wasn’t the right path for me. Last week, I made the difficult decision to quit my web development business and return to my true passion—this blog.
Is It Time to Leave Your Stressful Career?
Here are some signs that it might be time to throw in the towel on your stressful career:
- Chronic Stress and Burnout: If you’re constantly feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or exhausted, it’s a sign that your career is negatively impacting your health.
- Lack of Passion: If you no longer feel excited or motivated by your work, it might be time to reconsider your path.
- Impact on Personal Life: When your job starts affecting your relationships, family time, or personal well-being, it’s crucial to evaluate if it’s worth the sacrifice.
- Misalignment with Life Goals: If your career isn’t taking you towards your personal milestones or dreams, it might be time for a change.
A pivotal moment for me came during a conversation with a friend and client. He asked me a simple but profound question: “Is this business taking you towards your top life goals?” or what he called “milestones of a self-actualized Caitlin.” This question made me reflect deeply. I realized that, while trying to be logical and secure (I tend to be an “overly optimistic” dreamer and it often gets me in trouble), I had veered away from what truly made me happy. During our three-hour conversation, he assured me that I would be okay if I pivoted.
Is your career taking you towards your top life goals?
He said, “Write those top milestones down, no more than seven. Then create milestones between those goals.” Anything that comes about, do not engage in.
That night, I wrote down my top life milestones and began planning my pivot back to the blog and wellness. The ideas started flowing—permaculture design, vacation property management, even farming!
Discussing this with my husband, he reminded me of the blog’s growth over the past few years. It was a moment of clarity. I decided to return to “full-time” blogging (as full-time as possible with four kids and one on the way!) with a more focused approach and an expanded range of wellness content.
Your body doesn’t know the difference between “good” and “bad” stress. To it, it’s all the same.
Here’s what you can expect:
- New and Expanded Content: My interests have grown, and I’m excited to share more about general wellness, including nutrition, mental health, and holistic living.
- Interviews and Collaborations: I’ll be featuring more interviews with professionals and collaborating with others in the wellness space.
- Orlando Thrive Tribe Events: I plan to dedicate more time to organizing events with my local wellness community, the Orlando Thrive Tribe.
- Wellness Box Subscription: I’m working on a new way to bring wellness into your homes through a subscription box filled with curated wellness products.
- More Logical Time and Financial Management: I’ll focus on monetizing the blog in smarter ways, prioritizing my family and mental well-being above all.
This transition hasn’t been easy, and the stress of change is real. But I am energized and hopeful about the future. The lessons I’ve learned in the last couple of years are invaluable and will guide me in both personal and professional growth.
I’ve learned that stress, regardless of its source, takes a toll on our bodies. While trying to manage my web development business, I often felt overwhelmed. It wasn’t just the workload; it was the emotional burden of working in a field that didn’t ignite my passion.
If you’re feeling similarly stuck in a career that drains you, I encourage you to take a step back and reflect. Write down your top life milestones and see if your current path aligns with them. It might be time to throw in the towel and pursue what truly makes you happy.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me. Your support means the world, and I’m thrilled to take this next step with you.
With love and wellness,
Caitlin
